CCS

CCS is a skateboard mail-order and online retailer, first called California Cheap Skates. It began in San Luis Obispo, California, in 1985 and is now based in Portland, Oregon.

History

  • CCS began in San Luis Obispo, California, in 1985 as California Cheap Skates. A small shop, it soon became one of skateboarding's first mail-order businesses, and its catalogue became essential reading for skaters. [1][3]
  • The 1987 catalogue was two catalogues in one: California Cheap Skates (hard goods) at one end and California Surf Style (clothing and accessories) at the other. The two divisions merged in the early 1990s. [2]
  • Foot Locker bought CCS in 2008, shortened the name to CCS and opened 22 CCS shops. [4][3]
  • CCS did not meet Foot Locker's expectations. Foot Locker planned to close it but sold it to Portland's Daddies Board Shop in 2014. [4][3]
  • CCS is now based in Portland, Oregon. [1][3]

Sources disagree

  • The 2008 price differs: Wikipedia gives $103 million in cash (bought from Alloy), while Skate and Annoy gives $102.3 million.
  • Skate and Annoy notes that a 1984 founding date has been claimed, but it could not find adverts to back this up and gives 1985. CCS's own page also says 1985.
