Habitat

Habitat began as a sister brand to Alien Workshop under DNA Distribution, with its look shaped by Joe Castrucci. After years of ownership changes it is now run independently by Castrucci.

History

  • Habitat was launched as an offshoot of Alien Workshop under the DNA Distribution umbrella. [1][2][3]
  • Joe Castrucci, hired by Alien Workshop to oversee its Photosynthesis video, went on to lead the development of Habitat and created its visual identity. [2][3]
  • Kerry Getz and Danny Garcia were among the riders who moved to Habitat from Alien Workshop. [2]
  • DNA Distribution, and with it Habitat, passed to Burton Snowboards and later to Rob Dyrdek, before venture capital buy-outs led to a period of confusing ownership. [2][3]
  • Rob Dyrdek, the majority shareholder, eventually handed the company to long-time brand manager Joe Castrucci, who now runs Habitat independently. [3]
  • Habitat kept most of its long-standing riders through these difficulties, and Bobby De Keyzer turned pro for the brand in 2017. [3]
  • The brand describes itself as rooted in street skateboarding, skate films and graphic design, and operates from headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. [1]

Sources disagree

  • Founding year: Habitat's own site and Wikipedia's Alien Workshop article give 2000; Sidewalk gives 1999.
  • Burton takeover: Wikipedia says Burton acquired DNA Distribution in February 2008 (with Dyrdek buying it from Burton in 2012); Sidewalk dates the move to Burton to 2012.
  • Base: Habitat's site gives Cincinnati, Ohio headquarters; Sidewalk says Castrucci runs it through Official Distribution in Sacramento.
