Rollersnakes

Rollersnakes is a skate shop and mail-order retailer founded in Derby in 1985. It once ran shops across the Midlands and now trades from a warehouse and shop in Derby.

History

  • Rollersnakes opened its first shop in Derby in 1985, and later ran shops in Nottingham, Leicester and Stoke as well. [1][2]
  • The Nottingham shop had the company's first indoor mini ramp. It appeared in Blind's video 'Video Days'. [1][2]
  • Rollersnakes put out the early UK skate videos 'Rollersnakes 540' (1991) and 'Rollersnakes 720' (1992), with skaters including Alex Moul, Tom Penny and Geoff Rowley. [2][1]
  • In the mid-1990s the company switched its focus to mail order, selling through catalogues, printed adverts and its video magazine 'Videologue'. It then closed its shops and moved everything to a warehouse in Derby. [1]
  • Video-Log 2 came out in spring 1994 as a kind of UK answer to 411VM. It included the Radlands Championship and a World Industries team session in Nottingham's Market Square, and was filmed by Leigh Haynes and Andy Evans. [3]
  • The company says it has recently become employee-owned through an Employee Ownership Trust. It also runs free-to-skate areas at its Derby site. [1]

Sources disagree

  • Rollersnakes is sometimes described as a Nottingham shop. Its own history names Derby as its home town and where it was founded; Nottingham was one of its branches.
