Zorlac

Zorlac was a Dallas skateboard company started by freestyler and Thrasher photographer Jeff Newton, famous for Pushead's skull-heavy graphics and its punk and metal image.

History

  • Jeff Newton, a 1970s freestyle skater and Thrasher photographer, started Zorlac in Dallas in 1976, working out of a garage. [1][3][2]
  • Pushead (Brian Schroeder) drew Zorlac's deck graphics from around 1981 for nearly a decade. [4][1]
  • Pushead's Metallica 'damaged pirate' deck for Zorlac is regarded as the brand's most famous and sought-after board. [5]
  • Texas riders Craig Johnson of Dallas and John 'Tex' Gibson of Houston rode for Zorlac. [1][2]
  • By the late 1980s the company had moved from Dallas to San Diego and then La Jolla, California. [1][2]
  • Its 1991 video Zero Hero is described as the company's last moment of glory. [1][3]
  • After Newton passed the company to David Brown, Newton's later attempt to use the Zorlac name led to a legal dispute that left the brand with Brown after a 2011 decision. [2]

Sources disagree

  • Garage: Grave City says the company started in a two-car garage, while Skate and Annoy says it began in Newton's mother's garage.
