Screaming Hand
For the Screaming Hand's 30th birthday, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History gave it a whole exhibition: original art by Jim Phillips alongside work by around 200 other artists inspired by the Hand, from August 2016 to March 2017. It followed the 30 Screaming Years touring show and broke the museum's attendance and membership records.
Phillips, born in San Jose in 1944 and art director at NHS through the 70s and 80s, traced the idea back to his surf cartoons: "a clenched hand sticking out of the water like a drowning guy", which he went on doodling on his book covers and notepads.
