Creature

Creature was started in 1994 by artist and former Santa Monica Airlines team manager Russ Pope, then shelved and later revived by NHS in the mid-2000s. It is known for horror-themed graphics.

History

  • Creature was founded in 1994 by Russ Pope, an artist and former team manager for Santa Monica Airlines. [1][2][3]
  • Jason Adams and Darren Navarrette were on the original team. [3]
  • The first incarnation of the brand did not last and was shut down in the 1990s. [2][3][1]
  • NHS, the company behind Santa Cruz, revived Creature in the mid-2000s with Santa Cruz art director Lee Charron and pro skater Darren Navarrette. [1][2][3]
  • Creature videos include Born Dead (2006), Black Metal (2007) and Hesh Law (2009). [2]
  • NHS lists Creature among the brands it manages. [4]
  • Team rider Milton Martinez was Thrasher's Skater of the Year in 2019. [1]

Sources disagree

  • End of the first run: one source says operations ceased in 1995, another says the late 1990s; the same source giving 1995 also lists 1996 and 1997 videos.
  • Revival: one source gives 2005, others say mid-2000s or 'ten years' after founding.
