Popwar

Popwar came out of Giant Distribution around 2002, after New Deal lost momentum, and was first called Populis. It faded after being sold around 2005, and a licensed relaunch in 2011 lasted only months.

History

  • Popwar started around 2002 through Giant Distribution, which also distributed New Deal, and was initially called Populis before becoming Popwar within a few months. [1][2]
  • Cairo Foster, who had been riding for Real, wanted to start his own company and launched the brand after talks with Giant. Giant's Steve Douglas and Bod Boyle were involved. [1][2]
  • Graphic designer Yogi Proctor, formerly of Tum Yeto and TransWorld SNOWboarding, shaped the brand's visual identity. [1][2]
  • In 2003 Popwar released the Drops Technical series of decks. [2]
  • A Popwar video was filmed but never officially released. [2]
  • Around 2011 the Popwar name was licensed by a Utah-based operator who produced a handful of boards, but the revival closed within about six months. [1][2]

  • End date: SkateboardStickers.com says Popwar was sold around 2005 and ceased activity around summer 2007; Rad Rat Video describes the 2005 sale and the brand stalling by 2006.
  • Early team: SkateboardStickers.com lists Chad Bartie, Ricky Oyola, Lincoln Ueda, Fabrizio Santos and Ryan Johnson; Rad Rat Video and Amateur Athlete name the core crew as Cairo Foster, Kenny Reed, Rob Gonzalez and Chad Tim Tim.
